On August 8-14, the 2022 National Bank Canadian Open will see the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Iga Świątek, Naomi Osaka, and Carlos Alcaraz battle it out on the Canadian hard courts for points on tour.

The men’s ATP Tour Masters 1000 will be taking place in Montréal at the IGA stadium, while the women’s WTA 1000 tournament is going to the Aviva Centre in Toronto.

Read on to see the frontrunners for the men’s and women’s 2022 Canadian Open tennis tournament, as well as where the Canadian entrants stand in the odds.

WTA Toronto has a clear favourite

The name that’s dominating WTA headlines this year is Iga Świątek, a record-setter and Canadian Open favourite.

Having won the Roland Garros Grand Slam, Miami Open, Indian Wells Open, Qatar Open, and Internazionali BNL D’Italia already in 2022, the Polish 21-year-old is understandably tipped to add the Canadian Open crown.

At +275 to win the Canadian Open, Świątek is leagues ahead of her closest competitors. Paula Badosa (+1500), Simona Halep (+1300), Ons Jabeur (+1100), Cori Gauff (+1300), and Naomi Osaka (+1500) aren’t being given much of a chance of beating her, and neither is the unseeded reigning champion, Camila Giorgi (+7500).

For Canada, Leylah Fernandez comes to the National Bank Open ranking 14th after a run to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. The Montréal-native is given odds of +3000 to win the tournament.

There are also plenty of Canadians in action on the opening day of WTA Toronto.

However, Rebecca Marino, Katherine Sebov, and Carol Zhao are all against stronger opponents in the tennis odds. The three Canadians in a parlay yields odds of +13100.

ATP Montréal is a close call

Last year’s champion, Daniil Medvedev, looks to face a tough challenge from Carlos Alcaraz if he’s to take the 2022 Canadian Open.

Outright odds for ATP Montréal this year put the Russian right-hander at +300 to win the tournament. Close behind, the Spanish 19-year-old – who won Madrid – is at +400 for the Canadian Open.

While he is out at +900, Jannik Sinner shouldn’t be ruled out just yet. Having most recently bowed out to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and won Umag by beating Alcaraz in the finals, the Italian looks to be building momentum.

Canada’s headliner at ATP Montréal 2022 is Felix Auger-Aliassime (+2000). The 6’4’’ Québécois impressed in February with a run to the finals on Marseille’s hard courts and winning on the hard courts of Rotterdam.

Day One of the 2022 Canadian Open sees Canadians Alexis Galarneau, Vasek Pospisil, and Denis Shapovalov take to the court.

Shapovalov has the closest match and is given +110 odds to progress to the next round, while a parlay of the trio carries odds of +4126.

Even though Europeans are the runaway favourites in the odds, there’s enough local talent coming to the 2022 Canadian Open that one might just break through for a memorable triumph at home.
